„SONGS & WHISPERS“ – Circuit 11/2014
Aireene is a singer/songwriter based in Oakland, CA, playing mostly original songs accompanied by latin/african rhythms, folk, bluegrass pickings and inspirations from gospel music - a mix of stompin', swayin', and timeless Americana.
She was born in the Philippines and moved to the United States at 10 years old, growing up in the third culture: the old country, the new country and a blend of both worlds. Mainly influenced by listening to Alan Lomax's field recordings from the South, and growing up listening to her uncles' Filipino folk guitar fingerpicking, her lyrics celebrate human beings being human, stories from ghosts and the living, and identities of cultures within cultures.
Backed by her tenor ukulele and guitar, both a 1950s Martin, Aireene's performances draw influences from the deep, earthy, heart-felt voicings of some of her favorite singers such as Odetta, Etta James, and Nina Simone.
Aireene tours solo and also with her band, Aireene & The Rarrities, currently promoting her new album which will be released in November 2014.-------------------------------

German version -------------------------------Aireene Espiritu wuchs mit den Klängen der philippinischen Folk-Gitarre ihres Onkels auf und wurde stark von Alan Lomax´ Aufnahmen volkstümlicher Musik aus aller Welt beeinflusst. Aus dieser Mischung entstand ein Sound, der seine Wurzeln in so verschiedenen Genres wie Folk, Bluegrass und Gospel, aber auch in afrikanischen und Latino-Rhythmen hat.
Espiritus Lieder feiern den Menschen als Menschen und erzählen Geschichten von Geistern und Lebenden sowie von kultureller Identität. Ihr Gesang ist ebenso zeitlos und bodenständig wie ihre Musik, getragen vom zarten Spiel ihrer Tenor-Ukulele.
Aireene fühlt sich seit ihrer Jugend hingezogen zu den Geschichten des amerikanischen Südens: Delta Blues, Lieder aus lang vergangenen Zeiten, die aus ehrlichen Emotionen geboren wurden und von den Härten und Freuden des Lebens erzählen. Sie lernte Gitarre zu Liedern von Robert Johnson, Ledbelly, Etta James, Nina Simone und Odetta und nutzte diese Inspiration, um ihre eigenen Songs zu schreiben.
In diesem Jahr wird sie im Rahmen der "SONGS&WHISPERS" Circuits zu sehen sein, um ihre Neuveröffentlichung "Put back Charlie" vorzustellen.

Widely respected mandolinist/guitarist Tom Corbett’s third album, Tonight I Ride, is a colorfully musical pastiche of open-hearted stories and fond snapshots of the American West. This album will be released on the label Songs & Whispers in November 2014.
Highly regarded by peers for his skill at crafting parts that flesh out songs without flash or ego, Corbett’s soulful fretwork is supported by some of the West Coast’s finest acoustic artists, including bluegrass legends Herb Pedersen and Bill Bryson, Los Lobos percussionist Victor Besetti and many more.
The album came together once Corbett realized he was writing songs “with a Western bent.” The melodic title track’s key line — “I may never have touched the ground of freedom but tonight I ride” — was inspired by a trip to the Checkpoint Charlie Museum in Berlin, of all places, while “17 Miles a Day” looks at Western pioneers’ race against time and winter snows. Tonight I Ride, which follows 2001’s Upstairs at Charlie’s and 2004’s Cloudless Blue Sky, is a crisply produced showcase for Corbett’s wit, warmth and creative versatility. The album is enjoyable and full of high spirits. Next to his fun-loving streak he also owns a sentimental vein. His song „Still hear her crying“ is a good instance.With a mix of traditional Folk and sentimental Blugrass, Tom Corbett shows how versatile and talented he really is. Additionally, he wrote eleven songs on his own.
More recently he taught Tom Selleck how to play ukulele for a role, and provided music for the Ted Haggard-themed play This Beautiful City at Centre Theatre Group in Los Angeles. -------------------------------

German version -------------------------------Lebhafte Geschichten und liebevolle Momentaufnahmen von Personen und Szenen aus dem amerikanischen Westen - einige wahr, andere frei erfunden, das ist die Essenz der Songs von Tom Corbett. Der Kalifornier steht bereits seit zwanzig Jahren auf der Bühne, zunächst als Mitglied verschiedener Bands, wie dem Folk-Bluegrass-Swing-Ensemble „Acousticats“, seit 2001 ist er nun aber als Solo-Künstler unterwegs. Insgesamt veröffentlichte Corbett schon drei Alben, der jüngste Longplayer mit dem Titel „Tonight I Ride“ erscheint im November auf dem Songs & Whispers Label.
Tom Corbett ist tief in der Acoustic Music-Szene von Los Angeles verwurzelt, weshalb er auf die Unterstützung der besten Musiker der amerikanischen Westküste zählen kann. So arbeitete Corbett zum Beispiel bereits mit den Bluegrass-Legenden Herb Pedersen und Bill Bryson, sowie Social Distortion-Frontmann Mike Ness zusammen. Dem ehemaligen Magnum-Darsteller Tom Selleck durfte Tom Corbett, der schon im Alter von 11 Jahren die Banjo-Mandoline seines Vaters für sich entdeckte, für eine Rolle sogar das Ukulele-Spielen beibringen. Der Multiinstrumentalist verwendet für seine musikalische Mischung aus Country, Folk, und Blues am liebsten Vintage-Mandolinen, Banjos, Gitarren und Bässe. Dabei kommt live dann gerne einmal echte Saloon-Stimmung auf. Kein Wunder bei Songs wie „Welcome to Tom’s Place“, der angetrieben von Corbetts kunstvollem Mandolinenspiel, die Freundschaft und die simplen Freuden des Lebens zelebriert. Genauso gut trifft der Kalifornier aber auch nachdenklichere Töne, wie in dem titelgebenden Stück „Tonight I Ride“, indem er mit Sehnsucht in der Stimme den Wunsch nach Freiheit besingt, inspiriert von einem Besuch am Checkpoint Charlie in Berlin. Wer also schon immer einmal wissen wollte, wie sich der Sound aus dem wilden Westen der USA heutzutage anhören kann, sollte Tom Corbett auf seiner Tour durch Deutschland und Benelux auf keinen Fall verpassen.
