From the start, Vancouver’s Christa Couture established herself as a singer-songwriter with sharp-shooting wit, effortless grace and heart-on-sleeve intensity.
Since her critically acclaimed debut album, FELL OUT OF OZ (2005), and her sophomore record, THE WEDDING SINGER AND THE UNDERTAKER (2008), she has explored intimate spaces with a frank confidence that avoids cliché and melodrama.
This “criminally underrated songwriter” (Alex Varty, Georgia Straight), has a new album, THE LIVING RECORD (September 2012). Produced by Steve Dawson, the album from is inspired by tragedy, yet leaves one singularly unprepared for the sound: bright, beautifully-orchestrated indie folk; sweet, idiosyncratic vocals reminiscent of artists like Regina Spektor and Jane Siberry; a luscious palette of sonic styles – fuzzy guitar, bluegrass-style pickin’, soulful cello, quirky chorus-like vocal arrangements, even a touch of cabaret.
Couture has toured across Canada and the UK from small towns to major festivals. She’s hit the Top 10 on CBC Radio 3, had a #1 hit on the Aboriginal Music Countdown, won “Best Folk Album” at the 2008 Canadian Aboriginal Awards and will tour across Europe during CIRCUIT 05/2013.
---------------------------- German version ----------------------------Verstand, Anmut und Intensität: Was so vielen Songs heutzutage fehlt, vereint die Musik von Christa Couture in schönster Weise. Als Tochter einer Folk-Sängerin und eines traditionellen indianischen Zeremoniensängers, begann Couture schon in ihrer Kindheit im Chor zu singen und eigene Stücke zu schreiben. Mit 24 Jahren veröffentlichte sie 2005 ihr Debütalbum „Fell Out Of Oz“, das von der Kritik ebenso gelobt wurde, wie das Folgewerk „The Wedding Singer and The Undertaker“ (2008).
Ihr aktuelles Album „The Living Record“ erschien im vergangenen September und wurde maßgeblich von einigen tragischen Ereignissen in Christas Leben inspiriert. Anstatt ihre Erfahrungen in trübseligen Balladen zu verarbeiten, überrascht die Sängerin aber mit hellem, wunderschön orchestriertem Indie-Folk. Gerade die Kombination aus dem süßen, eigenwilligen Gesang, der an Künstlerinnen wie Regina Spektor und Jane Siberry erinnert, und den persönlichen Texten, machen die Songs von Christa Couture zu etwas ganz besonderem. Die akustische Gitarre, kommt genauso zum Einsatz wie das Cello, Bluegrass-Elemente treffen auf Chor-ähnliche Gesangsarrangements und sogar ein Hauch Kabarett lässt sich in den Stücken wie „You Were Here in Michigan“ oder „Pirate Jenny and The Storm“ wieder finden.
In ihrer Heimat Kanada hat sich Christa Couture durch ausgedehnte Touren bereits einen Namen gemacht. 2008 wurde sie mit dem Preis für das beste Folk-Album bei den Canadian Aboriginal Awards belohnt und auch in den Top 10 des kanadischen Radio-Senders CBC Radio 3 war die Sängerin bereits vertreten. Im Mai kommt Christa Couture dann zum ersten Mal nach Europa, um auch das Publikum hier mit ihrem ganz besonderen Charme in den Bann zu ziehen.

“Night-time on the boulevard, the tides are pretty high” sounds the opening line on Robert Carl Blank’s new album “ROOMS FOR GIANTS”. The industrious and tirelessly touring songwriter is back with his third album, and we can see a little sea change. The globetrotting singer, guitar player and skydiver has made an Album of 12 individuated Rock and Pop songs. It seems Robert is not interested in any labels - maybe because life is too short and too good for sticking to one routine only. That is why the overused label “singer/songwriter” is only a vague description of Robert. The pop singer and song smith is much more than that!
Robert Carl Blank is a restless and passionate idealist who set out for a life as a musician without any pretences and compromises. Untouched by the amenities of the bourgeois life-style he travels the world year in and year out, armed only with a collection of guitars, a parachute and a lot of soul. He plays his songs everywhere he can, watches carefully, collects new material and plots down his experiences and impressions as coded road journals. As soon as he has finished recording one album he already has enough material for the next one. But his songs are not to be mistaken for fill-ins written on the drawing board. They are carefully crafted from his road journals, inspired from intensive experiences on a self-booked world tour. Robert Carl Blank wants one thing the most – to touch people, to take them along on his journey and to show them his world out there. This journey often goes deep and to curious places: Traffic jams, airport terminals, bars, hotel rooms. These are usually his creative spots. He rarely writes at home …

Der fleissige und unermüdlich tourende Songwriter meldet sich mit seinem dritten Werk zurück, und es hat ein kleiner Kurswechsel stattgefunden bei dem weltreisenden Sänger, Gitarristen und Skydiver: Rockiger, markanter, und auch poppiger kommen die 12 Songs rüber. Den Hamburger mit den tschechischen Wurzeln interessieren keine Schubladen, da ihm das Leben in seiner ganzen Vielfalt dafür viel zu schade wäre. Der inzwischen schon inflationär gehandelte Titel des „Singer/Songwriters“ ist bei Robert daher auch nur reine Nomenklatura, denn der Popsänger und Songschmied ist viel mehr als das. Er ist ein rastloser und leidenschaftlicher Idealist, der sich für ein kompromissloses Musiker-Leben entschieden hat. Unberührt von den Bequemlichkeiten des bürgerlichen Lebens reist er bepackt mit einer Batterie von Akustischen Gitarren, einem Fallschirm und einer dicken Portion Soul das ganze Jahr über durch die Welt, sammelt Material, beobachtet, und schreibt seine Eindrücke und Erfahrungen als kodierte Reiseberichte nieder.
Robert Carl Blank will dabei vor allem nur eins – die Menschen berühren, sie mit auf seine Reise nehmen und Ihnen seine Welt da draußen zeigen. Diese Reise geht zum Teil sehr tief und an kuriose Orte: Staus, Flughafenterminals, Bars und Hotelzimmer sind in der Regel seine kreativen Räume. Er schreibt überall, nur nicht zu Hause...
Sein erster musikalischer Reisebericht nach 10 Jahren worldwide travelling (das Debütalbum „SOUL CIRCUS“) wurde von der Presse mit Lobeshymnen überhäuft. Dabei macht Robert einfach nur das, was ihm Spaß macht, und man hört es in seinen Liedern. Zwischen Pop-Songs mit eingängigen Melodien, wunderschönen Balladen und rockig-treibenden Rhythmen spürt man die Energie und Kraft des Soul, und immer das Gefühl für den Moment. Robert hat in der Musik seine eigene Sprache und seinen eigenen Sound gefunden, und sein Herz ist der Motor für diese Kunst.
