LONG BLACK VEIL . FRED RASPAIL & JOE SUMMER

We were back from a gig in Osterholz.... Late at night.... Joe Summers, a singer comin from Bristol, had joined us for a few days, to practice with Zen Elephant. Joe usually speaks a lot :), but most of it, he's got a wonderful voice, something clear, something like angels, as mine is usually darker an full of smoke... Late at night, driving, in a car.... I was tellin to Joe about this old american song, LONG BLACK VEIL, I sang one time for the funerals of the son of one of my friends last year.... Sad story.... We began to sing.... We wanted to record it back to the flat, but, you know, when you are on Songs and Whispers Tour, you are always on the road or on stage ! I took my IPhone, switched off the gps, and said to Joe... Hold it man ! Let's record ! As we finished the song, we were arrived at the flat..... Amazing moment, thank you so much Joe ! LONG BLACK VEIL . FRED RASPAIL & JOE SUMMER

Day 6: TV and Truck Stops

Had a busy few days, so time to catch up! On Tuesday we drove down to Delmenhorst to record a song and interview for Radio Weser TV, which is a local TV station. Bobbo and I are still working on successfully getting through an interview without saying something completely ridiculous. Hasn't happened yet but we keep trying! The best part was when they put a little camera on our car dash and asked us to drive around the block, as if we are just arriving to the station. We pulled away and cranked the radio, dancing and singing and bouncing around like fools. Yep, we're super serious rock stars! From there we headed back to the harbor area in Bremen to play at the Hafen Casino Truck Stop. We've been incredibly lucky with the weather so far, every day has been about 75 degrees and sunny. Luckily this was no exception, because the venue is a pretty tiny little restaurant but has a nice big patio surrounded by a few dozen picnic tables. By the time Ben started his set we already h...

Love to Bremerhaven and Kiel.

The last couple days have been harbor days. I'm spending time traveling between many of the Northern German Hanseatic cities that I learned about when I studied Scandinavian History in Oslo, Norway in 2010. It's something else to see those places in person and what they once were and exist in the places where those trading empires once thrived. Being a West Coast American, it's easy to become overwhelmed with historical places, old buildings, ruins, when you realize the oldest buildings you grow up around are from 1896. July 3rd I travelled with Heiko in his van to Bremerhaven to play at Passage Kino to a lovely local audience. I'm still amazed by how Germany is just a fantastic place to play music. After playing, Heiko and I retrieved Vietnamese food from the venue and headed down to the docks, where the sun was setting in the west, creating lines of color in the distance.
