From Strangelove and Witness to PATRICK DUFF and GERARD STARKIE...

Gerard Starkie has recently returned with the release of his second solo album, Potions. Former lead singer with Witness, the band signed to Island Records released two albums; Before The Calm (1999) and Under A Sun (2001). They both received the most extraordinary critical applause, some of which was especially reserved for Starkies own performances. The Times newspaper, for instance, claimed that Starkies vocals were “imbued with that nebulous quality of soul fragile, sensitive and exuding a dignified stoicism doubtless born of experience” while Q magazines review of Under a Sun stated that “almost overburdened by yearning melodies, chief Witness Gerard Starkie sings about life’s travails in aching tones reminiscent of REMs Michael Stipe”. Before the Calm gained a 9/10 review in NME whilst Under A Sun was awarded 5 stars in Uncut magazine.
During this time, Witness played on BBC’s Jools Holland as well as all gigging extensively including all the major European festivals.
The band quit Island in 2004 and soon after Witness disbanded with Starkie becoming a solo artist. His first album was released as a free download in 2006 and a series of solo gigs followed around the UK. The album, Drawbridge has currently received over 30,000 downloads worldwide.
Gerard is now back playing as a three piece with Joe Allen and Witness drummer, John Langley. The new album Potions was released through Lupine Records and received a 4 star review in the UK magazine, Uncut.

Als früherer Sänger der Band Witness hat Gerard Starkie bereits die Alben Before The Calm (1999) und Under A Sun (2001) unter Island Records veröffentlicht. Beide erhielten außergewöhnliche Zustimmung, besonders für die herausragende Performance Starkies.
Während dieser Zeit spielte Witness auf allen erwähnenswerten Festivals in Europa und bei BBCs Jools Holland. Die Band verließ Island Records im Jahre 2004 und kurz nach der Trennung der Band war für Starkie klar, dass er weiterhin als Solo Künstler auftreten wollte.
Sein erstes Album Drawbridge wurde 2006 als gratis Download veröffentlicht und von mehreren Solo-Auftritte rund um das Vereinigte Königreich gefolgt. Das Album hat mittlerweile über 30000 Downloads weltweit. Der Nachfolger Potions wurde durch Lupine Records veröffentlicht und erhielt im UK-Magazin Uncut eine 4 von 5 Sterne Bewertung.
Gerard Starkie ist mittlerweile zu den Wurzeln zurück gekehrt und spielt live zusammen mit Witness-Schlagzeuger John Langley.

Patrick Duff was born on 30 June 1966 in Bristol, England, to an Irish father and a Welsh mother. After dropping out of school and spending time as a street busker, he became lead singer of the alternative rock band Strangelove, who released three critically acclaimed albums between 1991 and 1998; Time For The Rest Of Your Life, Love and Other Demons and Strangelove. The band enjoyed top forty chart success with both singles and albums throughout this period.
Strangelove parted ways in April 1998 and Patrick then briefly formed another band, Moon, who split up after nine months having released one single, Anaesthesia.
Between 2000 and 2004 Patrick went on to travel the world as a solo artist with The WOMAD Festival, collaborating with a number of artists, most notably the then 81-year-old veteran African master storyteller and musician Madosini, with whom he lived and worked in the township of Langa, in Cape Town, South Africa.
In 2005 Patrick released his first solo album, Luxury Problems, co-produced by Alex Lee, who had also been a member of Strangelove.
His second album The Mad Straight Road was released in 2010 and Patrick has been performing throughout the last year in support of the album, with dates in England, Greece, Malta, Germany and Holland.
Patrick’s second Songs and Whispers tour in Germany during September will offer audiences another chance to encounter one of England’s most remarkable artists.

Patrick Duff, geboren in Bristol, war Mitglied der alternativen Rockband Strangelove und ist nun als Solokünstler unterwegs. Weg von Rockklängen bewegt er sich auf eher akustischen Pfaden. Duff selbst beschreibt es als „eine Synthese, der Musik die sein Leben formte“, dazu gehören Disney Soundtracks, The Beatles, Bob Dylan und Johnny Cash, die ihre Einflüsse zum Album beitrugen. 2009 veröffentlichte Duff als Solokünstler sein Album „The Maid Straight Road“.
