“SONGS & WHISPERS” has just released Vampires by London-based composer, poet and actor Adam Donen,. The follow-up to the critically acclaimed debut Immortality ("SONGS & WHISPERS" , 2011) is a second collaboration with Grammy-nominated German producer Robert Harder (Brian Eno, Herbie Hancock, Kylie Minogue). It has been celebrated in English press as “moving, transcendental music that takes you through terror and heartbreak, and out the other side.”
The contradictory feelings of attraction and hatred, explored by South African native Adam Donen with the album’s vampiric theme make the listener draw comparisons with Josh T. Pearson and Leonard Cohen. The subject is also informed by many of the artists he admires in other media – Edgar Allan Poe and Werner Herzog both have their work referenced in lyrics.
Structurally his songs reflect his idiosyncratic nature, avoiding traditional narrative but creating a dreamlike ebb and flow – in interviews, he has described the influence of David Lynch on his work. With his arrangements comes greater symphonic depth, particularly evident on track 7, Sickle Moon.
Fully invested in all aspects of his music, Donen wrote, arranged and produced the album. The eight-track album features vocals from opera soprano Sophie Juncker (winner of the International Handel singing competition), and double bass from Francois Moreau (The Duke Ellington Band) as well as a string quartet.
After returning from a 3 week tour “SONGS & WHISPERS” – CIRCUIT 01/2012 of Germany, Belgium and the Netherlands in January / February 2012, he has just finished the filming of an adaptation of Poe’s The Raven, in which he plays the lead role.
On the 2nd of April a new classical piece by Donen premiered, a requiem, performed by an orchestra at Old St Pancras Church, London, and co-written with The Cure’s Roger O’ Donnell.
After an album launch with his band, consisting of three members, in Berlin, he is going to support the release of Vampires with concerts in Germany in June and October.
