''SONGS & WHISPERS'' - CIRCUIT 08/2014
Music came all natural to Hanna Fearns: her mom’s mother was a performance artist touring the world with German folk songs, and in her dad’s family from Liverpool singing and performing was a natural ritual, just like the 5o’clock tea. As a child Hanna learned to play the piano, soon followed by guitar lessons. Inspirations came from her parents’ record collection: barely mastering her first three chords, she threw herself at Bob Dylan, Joan Baez Joni Mitchell and The Beatles. As a teenager Hanna became a fan of Chilean-born songwriter Alavro Peña-Rojas, founding member of the punk-rock legend The 101’ers with The Clash singer Joe Strummer, who was a commonly seen guest for the afternoon tea in her parent’s house. Mesmerized by these eccentric songs, she followed him around for band practice, visited shows and really got a taste of what a musician’s life is like.

Music came all natural to Hanna Fearns: her mom’s mother was a performance artist touring the world with German folk songs, and in her dad’s family from Liverpool singing and performing was a natural ritual, just like the 5o’clock tea. As a child Hanna learned to play the piano, soon followed by guitar lessons. Inspirations came from her parents’ record collection: barely mastering her first three chords, she threw herself at Bob Dylan, Joan Baez Joni Mitchell and The Beatles. As a teenager Hanna became a fan of Chilean-born songwriter Alavro Peña-Rojas, founding member of the punk-rock legend The 101’ers with The Clash singer Joe Strummer, who was a commonly seen guest for the afternoon tea in her parent’s house. Mesmerized by these eccentric songs, she followed him around for band practice, visited shows and really got a taste of what a musician’s life is like. In Germany she formed her first Country Band: Easy Country, covering songs from her favorite artists, such as Graham Parson, Emmilou Harris, Hank Williams, Patsy Cline, Maria McCee and Jonny Cash.
Inspired by the live successes and the feedback to their first EP, she started working on some own material. This is how Easy Country eventually became fearns. Americana, Alternative Country and Indirock were stylistic references, bands such as Calexico, Giant Sand, or singer Lucinda Williams marked the major influences. 1998 the EP “Language of the moment” was released, followed 2002 by fearns’ first album “Impatient Heart” and several support-shows for e.g. . Rich Hopkins, Heather Miles and Hazeldine, as well as club tours through Germany.
2006 Hanna moved from Konstanz in the South of Germany to Cologne in the West and in 2008, after recording the live album “fearns live – Beyond Expectations” the band split up and went separate ways.In Synch with the band’s break up the idea of a solo project developed and after finding a suitable producer in Hubl Greiner, member of the Avantgarde-rock-ledgend The Blech, things started to move: eleven songs, a 14-member band with an indiosyncratic instrumentation (including hammer dulcimer, euphonium, tres and bansuri) provide for the unmistakable sound leading through “Sentimental Bones”. The album is released on the label “SONGS & WHISPERS” on June 6th 2014.

German version ------------------------------- Hanna Fearns wurde die Musik in die Wiege gelegt: Die Großmutter mütterlicherseits tingelte als Vortragskünstlerin mit deutschen Kunstliedern um die Welt, in der Familie ihres aus Liverpool stammenden Vaters war Singen und Spielen von Folksongs so selbstverständlich, wie der Fünf-Uhr-Tee. Schon als Kind lernte sie Klavier und Gitarre, mit 15 zog es sie in die Welt, wo sie als Straßenmusikerin und in Bars das Publikum mit Songs von Joni Mitchell und Bob Dylan begeisterte. Mitte der 80’er spielte sie in einer Punk-New-Wave Band, blieb jedoch auch in dieser Konstellation ihrem Faible für Folk treu. Später, nach dem Besuch eines Conjunto- und TexMex-Festival in San Antonio, gründete Hanna ihre erste Country Band Easy Country, die Songs von Graham Parson, Emmilou Harris, Hank Williams, Patsy Cline, Maria McCee und Jonny Cash coverte. Als zum Repertoire zunehmend eigene Songs hinzukamen, benannte sich die Band in fearns um. Americana, Alternative Country und Indierock waren die stilistischen Einflüsse, Calexico, Giant Sand und Lucinda Williams wichtige musikalische Referenzpunkte. 1998 veröffentlichten fearns die EP „Language of the Moment“, 2002 dann mit "Imaptient Heart“ das erste Album. Es folgte eine ganze Reihe von Support-Shows für u. a. Rich Hopkins, Heather Miles und Hazeldine, sowie zwei Club-Touren durch Deutschland. 2008 löste sich die Band auf.
Parallel dazu entstand die Idee eines Soloprojektes und nachdem in Hubl Greiner von der Avantgarde-Rock-Legende The Blech der eignete Produzent gefunden war, nahm das Projekt Form an: elf Songs, ein vierzehnköpfigen Musikerensemble mit eigenwilliger Instrumentierung (Hackbrett, Euphonium, Tres und Bansuri) sorgen für den unverwechselbaren Klang, der jetzt auf „Sentimental Bones“ zu hören ist. Das Album wirde am 6. Juni 2014 auf dem Label „SONGS & WHISPERS“ veröffentlicht.

In the summer of 2006 Marco and Sara's worlds collapsed when both met in Savannah GA, and little did they know that three years later they will embark on such a musical journey. Marco is from Costa Rica and has been influenced by a lot of musical diversity that ranges from the sounds of heavy music to Latin rhythms; Sara grew up in Newark, OH listening to classic rock and folk music. It's no wonder where their need of experimentation comes from, and how this collapse of influences and cultural conversation makes them want to push envelopes and thrive to be unique. They even have some songs in Spanglish! The Castros has become a staple in its growing Columbus music scene, where they got selected to represent the city with a song for its Bicentennial and were named Best Local Band 2013 by (614) Magazine. They also have represented the city in a few music conferences (a-la SXSW) including the Millennium Music Conference in Harrisburg PA and the L.A.U.N.C.H. Music Conference and Festival in Lancaster PA. They try to craft their songs in such a way so that they can have greater depth and a meaning, and may ultimately help unveil the heart and open it up to the infinite possibilities of pure agape LOVE. That's in essence what The Castros are: a musical treat for the heart.

Marco Castro ist aus Costa Rica und wurde von einer großen musikalischen Vielfalt beeinflusst, die von Heavy Music bis hin zu lateinischen Rhythmen reicht.
Sara wuchs in Newark, Ohio auf und war dem Classic Rock und Folk-Musik verbunden.
Kein Wunder also, dass beide einen großen Drang nach Experimenten verspüren. Der Zusammenschluss von verschiedenen Einflüssen und kulturellem Dialog verleitet das Paar dazu, alles aus sich heraus zu holen und dabei einzigartig zu sein. Sie haben sogar einige Songs auf Spanglish gesungen.
Mittlerweile sind The Castros nicht mehr weg zu denken aus der Musikszene von Columbus, der Hauptstadt Ohios, wo sie auserwählt wurden, die Stadt mit einem Song anlässlich des zweihundertjährigen Jubiläums zu repräsentieren und sogar zur besten lokalen Band im Jahr 2013 gewählt wurden.
In 2011 nahm das Duo die EP mit dem Titel „The Tiny Airplane“ auf. Zur Zeit sind sie mit der Aufnahme eines kompletten Albums beschäftigt – einen Vorgeschmack darauf wird es anlässlich ihrer ersten Europatour im August 2014 geben.
The Castros versuchen ihre Songs so zu schmieden, dass sie einen tiefen Sinn und große Bedeutung bekommen. Das ist die Essenz, woraus The Castros gemacht sind: Eine musikalisches Vergnügen für das Herz.
